Meditation, Consciousness, Sentience, and Enlightenment

In the beginning, the universe came into existence. With the universe came the properties of time and space, and the content of energy and matter. The universe also came with a set of rules, and these rules dictated the relationship between time, space, energy, and matter. These rules are known as the laws of physics.

star-clusters-74052_960_720For a long time, all things in the universe obeyed the laws of space-time-energy-matter (STEM). Energy formed matter, matter warped time and space, matter followed the warping of time and space to form dense masses which became stars, and the matter in stars released energy according to fixed rules.

And then one day, after millions of years of interaction according to fixed rules, living creatures with consciousness emerged. These living creatures continued to obey the laws of physics in the larger sense, but they also developed an ability to utilize matter and energy, and an ability to move through space time with some freedom.

Along with consciousness came a desire to survive, and to survive consciousness needed to surreal-402830_960_720gather nutrients, expel waste, find a suitable environment in which to flourish, and to reproduce. To facilitate survival, a new set of rules emerged, the rules of attraction to pleasure, and aversion to pain (APAP). Consciousness began to identify pleasure with finding suitable nutrition and reproduction, and identifying pain with hostile environments and dealing with competing and predatory organisms.

For a vast amount of time, consciousness obeyed these APAP rules, until one day, the property of sentience or self-awareness emerged from within consciousness.

In a large sense, sentient beings continued to obey the survival laws of APAP and the physical laws of STEM. But with sentience came the willingness and ability to place the needs of others over the needs of self. With sentience a new rule emerged, the rule of love.

Still constrained by the laws of APAP, at first love limited itself to the raising of offspring, but grew to include larger units of family and community.

Some became obsessed with the rules of APAP, and taken to the extreme were trapped by attraction to pleasure in the form of addictions, and by aversion to pain in the form of phobias.

universe-1044107_960_720At some point, enlightened beings began to emerge from among the sentient beings. One enlightened being known as Buddha questioned the law of attraction, and rejected being controlled by desires. In the process he found a love that transcended the constraints of family and community and included the entire universe. He shared his newfound freedom to love without boundaries with his followers.

Another enlightened being known as Christ questioned the law of aversion, and rejected being controlled by the fear of suffering and death. In the process he found a love that transcended the constraints of family and community and included the entire universe. He shared his newfound freedom to love without boundaries with his followers.

Followers of these enlightened beings wanted to experience this newfound freedom to love solar-eclipse-151211_960_720without boundaries, and so began to investigate the longstanding rules of STEM and APAP. They developed rules and techniques for finding this new freedom, but in many cases found the rules (religions) they developed were not liberating but even more constraining.

Some followers developed contemplative techniques for letting go of APAP rules. After long hours of disciplined prayer and meditation, some actually managed to let go of the rules that had constrained sentient beings for so long. But in the absence of those rules, some found a profound sense of loss. They discovered that living without the pursuit of pleasure and the fear of pain left life empty and meaningless.

For those few who continued and persevered, beyond the dark and vast plain of emptiness, 1338259321they discovered the meaning that the enlightened beings who went on before had promised. Love without boundaries, unconditional love, love for all of the universe, love for all living consciousness, love for all sentient beings. Love beyond the constraints of family and tribe and nation. Unconditional Love for all that is, was, and will be. Love that transcends the rules of STEM and APAP.

The progression of creation has been, from the beginning, a progression of increasing complexity and freedom, from matter and energy, to conscious life, to sentient self awareness, to enlightenment. Rules were established and transcended. First the rules of physics were established and transcended by the rules of attraction and aversion. Then the rules of attraction and aversion were transcended by the freedom of unconditional love.

Contemplative practices such as centering prayer and meditation are a tool, a method for increasing freedom and joy. Whether trapped by obsession with desires in the form of addiction, or trapped by obsession with fear in the form of phobias, contemplative practices can help. For those who choose to continue contemplative practices to the release of all attractions and aversions, profound freedom and joy in the form of unconditional love is possible.

Meditation Skills to Ease Insomnia

People come to meditation for many reasons. Some people meditate to grow closer to their Higher Power, some to overcome personal obstacles, and some people meditate to improve their relationships with others.

While meditation can be useful for all of these purposes, the individual skills learned in meditation can have specific practical applications as well. One specific practical application where meditation skills can be useful is in dealing with insomnia.

Here is an example of how skills learned in the Christian Tantric Meditation book and classes can help with insomnia. The specific skills illustrated here include mind stabilization, taught in the first introductory classes, and self emptying, taught in the second set of classes:

********************************

sheep-738678_640Tossing and turning. Racing mind. Michelle was having another sleepless night.

In the morning, all the responsibilities would still be there. Kids, husband, and her own job. Sure, the kids and the husband could take care of themselves, and they often did, but after sleepless nights she missed having the time to be with them in the mornings. She also didn’t enjoy rushing to get herself ready for work, or the dragging fatigue that lasted all day.

She thought about the meditation discipline she had started several weeks ago. She had been practicing at least twice a week, mostly in the evenings. Overall, the practice had been helpful. She found she was getting better at dealing with day to day stress and occasional anxiety, and she was enjoying her life, her family, and work relationships more. When she thought about it, she realized that her sleepless nights were less frequent, but not gone altogether. And not tonight.

Having never tried her meditation techniques for sleeping, but having nothing to lose, she thought she would give them a try.

Laying comfortably on her side, she began attending to her breathing. She noticed how her breath felt entering her nose, how it cooled her throat, how it felt expanding her lungs. She noticed how she relaxed when she exhaled, letting the air out.

Continuing to practice breath centered mind stabilization, she found she was able to relax, but as soon as she relaxed enough to let go, a random thought brought her back, preventing her from falling asleep.

She thought about her latest random thought. Something that was overdue at work. “Ah”, she thought, “this thought represents a burden in my life, I know what to do with this.”

She allowed her consciousness to occupy her core space, and allowed herself to let go of her burden. With every breath, she allowed the burden to drift away. She then returned her attention to her breathing.

Almost asleep now, another thought brought her back from the brink of sleep. An old argument with her mother. An incident from her childhood that had been a point of contention for decades. Smiling, she recognized this thought as a lingering resentment.

With every breath, she allowed her consciousness to occupy her heart space, and she still-life-861822_640consciously let go of her resentment. With every breath, she allowed the resentment to drift away.

Now more relaxed, her attention returned to her breathing, and she drifted off to sleep.

Unlocking Human Potential

“Unlocking Human Potential” is an overused phrase. Its used to sell drugs, food products, cosmetic products, gym memberships, yoga, Martial Arts, Meditation, and all manner of self help programs.

As over used and commercialized as the phrase is, unlocking the full potential of every human being on this planet is perhaps the most important task before us, not only for humanity to thrive, but for humanity to survive.

Human potential is incredible. Human potential brought us Einstein, Mozart, and Madame Curie. Human potential also brought us Jesus the Christ, Buddha, and Ghandi.  We are capable of so much creativity, innovation, and beauty.

Many people believe that our potential for great and wonderful things is a Divine Gift. Divinity, Spirituality, and Humanity are all part of who we were created to be, made in the Image of God.  Whether our faith is in God, Karma, or Human Potential alone, we can all agree that we are capable of great and wonderful things.

Humanity has achieved a great deal, but there is so much left to do. Understanding the quantum building blocks of our universe has the potential of unleashing unlimited energy and synthesis of new and amazing materials. Understanding the building blocks of life has the potential of creating  cures for devastating diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s.

There are symphonies to write, artworks to create, people to heal, and love to share. There are bridges to build, roads to repair, and buildings to renovate. There are forces of nature to understand and tame, like earthquakes and hurricanes. There are oceans and streams and forests to clean up, and fellow living creatures to help flourish.

There is much to do, and human beings have been given the gifts, the rights, and the responsibilities to do these things. We have the potential.

But we are held back from realizing our potential. Too many people are held back for lack of access to clean water, healthy food, healthcare, and education. Too many hard working people are held back from achieving their potential due to hard economic conditions, prejudice, lack of encouragement, and a sense of powerlesseness.

Along with the external conditions that hold us back, there are also internal conditions that hold us back. Fear, anxiety, and depression. Addiction, codependency, and resentments. Even over-confidence and lack of listening skills and empathy can hold us back.  Many of us live a balancing act, dealing with our “issues” while we limp along in our jobs and careers, our families, and our faiths, making due but also holding back, being held back, from realizing our true potential.

Our true potential includes great love and compassion, and helping and sharing hope with others. By holding ourselves back, we hold everyone back.

How can we move closer to realizing our potential? It seems like common sense that we need to let go of the burdens and blocks in life that hold us back. Only by letting go of our burdens and blocks can we move forward to accept the Divine gifts that we are all blessed with.

For many people, laying our burdens down, and surrendering them to a Higher Power can be very liberating. For most of us, it takes more than a simple act of will to let go of burdens and blocks that have taken a lifetime to build. Most of us are like the seed that falls in shallow ground, our faith sprouts, but the cares of the world prevent us from realizing our true potential.

To build up mental, emotional, and physical strength and endurance requires exercise and attention to our environments. But most of all, it requires a healthy attitude, a new way of thinking, accepting hopefulness and healthiness as a way of life, more than just a desire to change. In order for our seeds of faith and hope to flourish, we need to cultivate the ground, our inner selves, our minds, hearts, and cores.

Christian Tantric Meditation offers a method for tilling our inner ground, breaking up the clumps of clay and rock that prevent our potential from flourishing. In our four part / eight class program, we teach basic meditation skills, letting go of the inner turmoil that holds us back, accepting the Divine Grace that provides nourishment and growth, and finally, healthy relationships and compassion for others.

We offer Meditation training classes in our Sautee Georgia studio in the beautiful north Georgia mountains, just 1.5 hours from Atlanta.  Our costs are very reasonable, 25.00 for a 1.5 hour class, or 20.00 if you register for two classes or bring a friend.

Our next introductory classes are opening Saturday October 17th.  Please visit our Contact and Registration page to register online, or give us a call at 678-358-8775.  We’re looking forward to helping you to realize your full potential.

The Christian Tantric Meditation methods are also available in book form through Amazon.com and some local booksellers.  Visit our publications page for more information about the book.

Have a Blessed Day!

Self Emptying: Experiencing Freedom

Last week we had our first “phase 2” classes, exploring the “self emptying” aspects of Christian Tantric Meditation. Prior to this, we’ve provided several classes that introduce centering breathing, open view, and open consciousness practices. These exercises all are foundational to the more focused practices that follow.

The question is often asked, what is self emptying, and why is it important?

Self emptying is a way to let go of the desires, resentments, and fears that hold us back in life. Once those burdens are surrendered, we may find a sense of freedom that we have not experienced for a long time in our lives. Freedom to experience life, love, and healing. Freedom to experience success, creativity, and peace. Freedom to be the hopeful, joyful, loving people that we were created to be.

To practice self emptying, it really is important to be familiar with the introductory practices. Like developing “muscle memory” of basic postures and moves when learning dance, marshal arts, or yoga, meditation requires knowledge and regular exercise of core disciplines.

We are offering another set of introductory classes this Saturday September 28th . Many people come for the morning class and save the afternoon class for a later date. Whether interested in a single class or both morning and afternoon classes, this is an opportunity to get away and experience not only meditation, but the beautiful North Georgia Mountains.

Enjoy horseback riding, hike or swim at Unicoi State part, visit beautiful Anna Ruby Falls, visit the Sautee Cultural museum, or tube down the clean mountan headwaters of the Chattahoochee river in Helen Georgia as part of your experience.

Visit our website to register for classes today. Our rates are 25.00 for a single class or 20.00 each for two classes or with a friend. We’re looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Spirituality and Meditation

As a counselor, when I talk with people about meditation, it is often in therapeutic terms. Learning how to relax, letting go of burdens that hold us back, and living mindfully and in the moment can help a person to be resilient in the face of day to day stresses.

cropped-20141025_163721_1.jpgThe process of self emptying not only allows us to let go of burdens and stresses, it also helps us to open a space within ourselves to receive Divine Energy that is beyond our 5 senses’ ability to perceive. In other words, self emptying meditation can increase our capacity for Spirituality. It’s often hard to see, hear, smell, taste, or feel anything with our five physical senses when we are burdened and stressed. When we have difficulty processing input from our physical senses our ability to perceive Spirituality is doubly impaired.

What is Spirituality? We often hear people say they are ‘Spiritual, not religious”, but what does that mean? For most people it means that we are in touch with something beyond ourselves, something that motivates, something that heals, something that inspires us to care for ourselves and for others. Jewish Scripture says God “breathed the breath of life into dust” (Gen 2:7) in creating humanity, in that sense Spirit is the breath energy that gives us life.

Spirituality can help “fill in the empty places” that are left behind when harmful thoughts or habits are challenged. Spirituality, connection with one’s inner strength and Higher Power, can help a person to move forward with a sense of fulfillment rather than emptiness and need.

Many people witness to “feeling the Spirit” as motivation for changing course when traveling, or floating-bonsaiin life. When they pay attention to this feeling, they find that they avoid major accidents or problems. In this sense, being “receptive to Spirit” can be part of maintaining one’s safety and well being.

“Divine Communion” meditation is used to help develop one’s sense of inner strength, and to invite one’s Higher Power to dwell within and be a part of our day to day lives. With a clear mind, open heart, and empty core that comes from “Self Emptying” practice, “Divine Communion” can help fulfill in a way that physical thoughts and activities and even relationships cannot.

1338259321With this in mind we are announcing the opening of our phase 2 classes covering “Self Emptying” practices on Saturday September 12th.  The morning session will cover “Freeing the mind and heart of harmful desires and resentments”, and the afternoon session will cover “Freeing the Core of Fears and Opening Self to Bliss”. Eventually we we will begin opening phase 3 “Divine Communion” classes.

We are also opening additional phase 1 classes on August 22nd, which introduce foundational practices of mindfulness and open consciousness. If you have been thinking about attending and would like the opportunity to move forward quickly through phase 1 and then phase 2 on September 12th, now is the time to register. All classes are open for repeat attendance if participants want to refresh and share experiences with others, but phase 1 classes must be completed before participating in phase 2.

If you are interested in learning more about Christian Tantric Meditation, Atlanta area classes are being offered in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains. Registration is open now, visit our website for more information and to register on line.  The book Christian Tantric Meditation Guide is also available through Amazon.com and local bookstores.

A Mid-Summer Rejuvenation

Ble Moon trimmedIts mid summer, and for those of us living in the southern United States, we can’t help but start to feel a little bit worn out. Looking in the garden, the beans and tomatoes, having produced abundantly in spite of the incessant stress of bugs and fungus, look tired.   The heat and humidity are taking their toll on our moods as well. Although we are grateful for the cooling rains and lush greenery that comes with such a humid summer, we can’t help but look forward to how nice a cool autumn breeze would feel.

Like the struggling plants, we carry on our lives and our duties as we must, but the daily routines begin to feel a bit like drudgery. We may notice that our creative energy is reduced, and like the plants in the garden, the creative fruits we produce are less abundant and lush.

It was with these thoughts in mind I recently entered into meditation. I asked myself, what can I tired_garden_1do to rejuvenate my sense of joy and creativity? As I practiced mind stabilizing breathing, I recognized a feeling that I hadn’t been aware of, sapping my energy – the feeling of guilt. I realized that I was feeling guilty for not getting up early enough in the morning, for not exercising enough, for not meditating as regularly as I would like, and for not finding time to be creative. In short, I was feeling guilty for suffering the side effects of feeling worn out.

20140605_073648_1Having recognized those feelings as part of my inner psyche, I moved into the self emptying phase of the practice with the intention of letting go of feelings of guilt. As I rested my consciousness in my mind Chakra, I let go of the desire to be perfect, to always be in control and to execute my daily disciplines flawlessly. With my mind cleared of that nagging guilt, I opened myself to the possibility of increased joy and freedom, which motivates creativity. As I rested my consciousness in my heart Chakra, I let go of the resentment had been building against myself for not being perfect, opening my heart to the possibility of love based inspiration. As I rested my consciousness in my core Chakra, I let go of the fear that my recent doldrums would be more than a temporary thing. With my core cleared, I made room for creative inspirations to take root, be nurtured and grow, until they would finally be ready to sustain a life of their own.

Finally, having cleared my mind, opened my heart, and emptied my core, I opened my entire being, allowing myself to be transparent and receptive to creativity in any form it might take.

This set the stage for the meditation stages that followed – Divine Communion and 20140606_074543_1Compassion. The creative energy that had being blocked was allowed to flow, and I forgave myself for being human, and subject to the same forces in nature that affect the plants in the garden.

So the question this brings to the table is, what may be blocking your creativity? For me it was at least partially a feeling of guilt, but there are many other possible stressors as well. Relationship issues, fear of failure, fear of success, fear of criticism are just some of the feelings that can block creativity, and with it block joy, love, and self confidence.

Christian Tantric Meditation provides a method for recognizing and letting go of the thoughts and feelings that block creativity. As Whole Beings created in the Image of God, we have the ability to accept and let go of our stressors that hold us back, and accept and participate in the Creative Joy, Love, and Peace that the Spirit makes available to all of creation, every minute of every day.

There is one week left to register for our next set of classes on Saturday August 8th. Open Consciousness Meditation

Open consciousness is one of the exercises we explore in our first Christian Tantric Meditation Workshops. Open consciousness is applied in all areas of Christian Tantric Meditation, including self emptying, Divine Communion, and Compassion. Applications for open consciousness practice include relaxation, stress relief, relief of physical and emotional pain, and increasing empathy for others.

Open consciousness begins with a basic practice known as Open View. Surprisingly easy, but not easily remembered or practiced, open view simply involves opening our eyes and taking in as much as we can. Instead of looking at an object in a room, we take in an entire wall. Instead of looking at a shrub or tree out of doors, we take in an entire landscape, street scene, or an entire horizon. Open view is literally the practice of taking in an entire forest without distraction from the individual trees.

Below are a few written illustrations of how Open View can be helpful in day to day life. The first illustration describes how Open View is an integral part of consciousness in nature. Enjoy!

cat-mia-703409_640The cat lay in his favorite place on the floor. A beam of sunlight shown in, warming his fur pleasantly. To look at him, one might have thought he was asleep. But his eyes were not completely closed, they were partially open, and he was aware of the entire room. His breath was relaxed and deep, his heart beat at a steady relaxed rate. Out of the corner of his eye he caught a movement, and his focus instantly snapped to attention. A beetle scurrying across the floor. The cat was upon the beetle within the breadth of a heartbeat.

Jerry had been staring at his computer screen for 4 hours. He groaned, stretched, and recognized the pain in his lower back returning. He loved his work, he loved the way he got into a “zone” when he worked, but he also realized how tense it made his body and his mood. He barely tolerated interruptions when he was working, and often neglected to take care of his bodily needs.

Glancing up from his computer, he saw the office wall in front of him. He recognized individual familiar objects, books, a white board, guest chairs, a coat rack. He knew his eyes were open, but he also knew that his perception wasn’t. He had been focused on a single object, his computer screen, for a long time. He breathed deeply and opened his perception to take in the entire wall rather than the individual objects.federal-chancellery-250605_640

He then rose from his chair and stood at his window. Likewise, he saw familiar scenery, with trees, a parking lot, and some flowers and shrubs. He breathed again deeply and opened his perception to take in the entire landscape.

He noticed how his breathing slowed automatically, and became deeper. He even noticed his heart beat slowing. After a few breaths, he left the office to take care of himself and exchange greetings and ideas with coworkers.

Chandra was staring at her mother. The air was thick between them. She didn’t even remember how this particular conflict began. She noticed the tension in her muscles, the tightness of her breathing, even the tension in the muscles around her eyes and mouth.

kitchen-691247_640Consciously, she shifted her attention to the backdrop of where her mother sat. The familiar kitchen, with the window, butterfly drapes, ceramic sink, and painted cupboards. Although here eyes were open, she knew she had been concentrating on one place in the room, her mother’s face, which carried so much tension and distress, as much as she knew her own face carried. Breathing deeply, she opened her attention to the entire backdrop behind her mother. Having practiced open view in the past, her peripheral vision was also part of her perception, so she was able to take in almost the entire kitchen.

As her perception opened, she noticed her face muscles relaxing, he breath deepening, and her heart slowing. She noticed that her mother’s face was relaxing also. Smiling, she said “This is important mom, but we need to take a break to clear our minds a little. How about a cup of tea?”
